Cleanings

Regularly scheduled professional cleanings are critical to maintaining a healthy mouth and a beautiful smile. For Most people, Glendora Dental Arts recommends a professional cleaning every six months to keep your teeth and gums healthy and strong.  On your first initial visit, Dr. Lee will do a comprehensive periodontal examination to assess your overall oral health.  Based on this assessment, your treatment may include:

  • PROPHYLAXIS. Plaque is a sticky film containing bacteria that attack tooth enamel and eventually cause cavities. This  bacteria also produce toxins that inflame the gums, leading to periodontal disease.  Prophylaxis is removal of plaque and minor stains, making teeth their whitest and brightest!
  • SCALING/ROOT PLANING (S/RP). Plaque left on teeth over time hardens and becomes calculus (tartar).  Tartar can only be removed with dental tools, and can cause gums to get infected, leading to periodontal disease.  If tartar buildup is below gum level, and attaches to the root surfaces of teeth, scalers and ultrasonic dental cleaning tools are used to remove these hardened buildup.  If left untreated,  it will cause bad breath, recession of gums making your teeth look longer, and will eventually result in loss of teeth.
  • PERIODONTAL SURGERY.  If periodontal disease has progressed to a point where your jaw bone is more than 50% lost, then a surgical procedure is recommended to remove all infected gum tissue to prevent further loss of bone.  This usually takes multiple visits and can get costly even with insurance.  The best prevention for this is good oral hygiene and regular dental cleanings.
  • ARESTIN AND LASER TREATMENT.  If there are localized areas of gum infection, then a targeted treatment only to those affected areas can be recommended. Placement of chemotherapeutic agent, or antibiotic directly to affected site (Arestin) is a simple procedure to reduce bacteria in those few pockets.  If infection is a bit more spread out, a Diode laser can be used to eliminate bacteria from under the gums.  These procedures are part of a combined treatment with S/RP.
